Julie Munro Are you ready for medical tourism 2.0?

My medical travel agency, Cosmetic Surgery Travel, has evolved and changed – what we did eight years ago is significantly different from what we are doing today.

Now, what I advise newcomers to the industry is very different compared with the advice I gave five years ago. Today, when I talk with clients about issues in the industry, I ask them to consider a number of questions as they develop or review their business strategy for a… Continue

Julie Munro Business strategies for changing times in medical tourism.

Protesting about the lack of patients or the poor service given by providers or agencies is not new.

In the first wave of enthusiasm for the business of medical tourism, despite millions of dollars being invested by businesses and hospitals, only a few companies actually delivered patients, and just a few long term business relationships were realized. These companies, and these relationships, continue to be strong today. The others? They complained about the lack of patie

Julie Munro When the hospital is the patient... and the website needs intensive care...

If you haven’t recently visited – or read – your hospital’s website, you may want to take a closer look at it. It may be very sick. Any facilitator linking to and promoting hospitals expecting to get help in closing a patient or an employer, needs to take a hard look at these sites.

Julie Munro Let's go Global! Universal! Galactic! with medical tourism

The escalation of superlatives in medical tourism is spiraling to ridiculous heights. Not only do we now have global healthcare - formerly the purview of such august institutions as the World Health Organization, and well-financed philanthropic organizations like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Let's put an end to these crazy nu… Continue

Julie Munro Cyberchondriac

Heard a new word on the latest TV show about doctors, Royal Pains. “Cyberchondriac” is the new healthcare consumer who reads up on his/her symptoms on the internet and self-diagnoses. In the extreme, the cyberchondriac will even tell the doctor how to treat the condition. The root of the word, of course, comes from hypochondriac – a person who believes he suffers from imaginary illness or symptoms. What a perfect word for a condition that is familiar to any medical travel facilitator who’s been… Continue

Julie Munro Medical Tourism: Here today, here to stay? Or born too soon, gone tomorrow?

If you haven’t yet read Ian Youngman’s article in the latest issue of the International Medical Travel Journal, I urge you to do so. He asks, What happened to those 2008 medical tourism forecasts? Even the most conservative prediction of 1,6 million medical tourists – more than double 2007 numbers – seems outrageously high. It suggests that the airline indus… Continue
